Learning the Language

Engineering has been portrayed in popular culture for many years. Movies and motion picture have transcended the way people view language. For example “geothermal energy” relates to the movie Matrix due to the fact that the only power source that keeps the matrix alive and functional is coming from underneath the surface of the earth. Popular culture is able to manipulate a specific language used by engineers and showcase it to people in a way that is understandable to the average person,
Another way pop culture has made it onto mainstream media in the hit television show called Mythbusters. They take myths and test them out to see if they are true or false.  While watching the show one can distinctly hear the difference use of language by the characters to everyday English that is spoken. The great thing about this show is that most of the projects that they replicate requires them to “MacGyver” it. The famous word that has trended not only in the world of engineers but is also used as everyday language.
What pop culture has been able to accomplish over the years has been phenomenal.  Through the use of pop culture in movies, stories, and television shows; engineering has been showcased to a larger audience. Not everyone is able to understand what exactly chemical engineering is or how it can relate to finding renewable energy, but popular culture is able to transform a language used in a specific field to create a better understanding amongst everyone.

  1. Mythbusters is a great show! Do you think that popular culture misrepresents the profession or Industry by oversimplifying it?

    1. I think popular culture actually helps enhance the profession. By making it simplier for people to understand they are able to learn more about the profession. There is a fine line between over simplification and just plain simple where a average person believes that he or she can perform the job. I think popular culture does a great job of not making the profession of a engineer seem too simple that anyone can do the profession. Pop culture opens the eyes of the possibilties there are out there for people interested in the engineering field to explore!
